Abhinetri is currently attending the University of Denver. She plans to graduate in the Spring of 2010 with a B.S. in Molecular Biology and minors in Chemistry and International Studies. Her interest to be an inVEST student ambassador stems from her passion surrounding the preservation of the Earth’s ecosystems and resources, as well as sustainability. She believes that now is the time to take action to make sure that future generations will possess the energy resources they need in order to survive. Abhinetri views awareness at the educational level as the foundation for laying the groundwork for sustainability initiatives.
In addition to her interest in environmental issues, Abhinetri is a human rights activist and Co-President of DU Amnesty International. She has been involved with human rights campaigns in local Amnesty International chapters since her sophomore year of high school. She is also an active member of the DU HIV/AIDS Awareness Committee, in which she works hard to dispel the social stigmas associated with individuals suffering from this atrocious illness. As Assistant Director on the Up til Dawn Executive Board, Abhinetri raises funds and awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and childhood diseases, including cancer and sickle cell anemia. This past summer, she represented the University of Denver at the Up til Dawn Collegiate Seminar in Memphis, Tennessee and had the opportunity to tour the prestigious hospital. Additionally, Abhinetri is currently researching in Dr. Christina Coughlan’s lab in an effort to explore cell cycle checkpoints and their role in Alzheimer’s disease.
Aside from her involvement on her college campus, Abhinetri was one of seventeen participants in the Miss Asian American Colorado Leadership Program, which culminated with a finale event on May 20, 2009. She was awarded first-runner up and the title of Miss Unity.
